Rye must now become a teacher and a protector (Butler 380). Because she can speak, Rye has a responsibility to these children to teach them how to also use this skill. They now look to her as an authoritative figure. Had she been more impaired and mute, these children would have never viewed her as someone to listen to, to follow. Rye has become powerful in their eyes. Rye is aware of this power she now has when she declares that â⠂¬Å"if the illness let these children alone, she could keep them alive† (Butler 107). Rye’s fear of the more disabled and what they would do to her if they found out she was different prompts her to always carry a weapon. Butler’s work recognizes that humans are primarily concerned with personal security. Rye’s personality is what motivates her into taking a proactive stance on her own protection, instead of leaving her protection in the hands of others. By always having a weapon on her, Rye can be assured that she is in charge of her own well being and does not need a savior, male or otherwise. This is the ultimate example the female dominance that Butler places in her stories. Butler’s feminism can be clearly seen in Rye’s reluctance to depend on other people for help or protection. When the illness struck there was a man with the habit â€Å"of urinating wherever he happened to be that wanted Rye to become his third woman; he already had two other women that put up with him just for the sake of his protection† (Butler, 96). Rye wanted nothing to do with this man and was disgusted by him. She uses him as an affirmation that she was making the right decision by leaving the bus behind. She was more concerned with staying independent, than relying on another, even when he could have given her a semblance of safety. Even when the bearded man beckoned her to join him Rye â€Å"Shook her head in a universally understood negative. † (94) Versus jumping at the opportunity to be â€Å"saved†. She has come to rely only on herself since the illness struck that trusting an unknown, albeit handsome man is difficult for her. A key theme in Octavia Butler’s writing is the ability to adapt to change while simultaneously living to avoid such change. This thought can be seen in Rye’s uncertainty about whether to accept Obsidian’s offer of a ride or continue on her independent way. Many believe that feminism can be equated to self reliance. Feminism is the view that biology is not destiny and that men and women should be politically, economically, and socially equal . Rye has effectively embodied feminism through her acts of independence. She sees herself as being equal in all aspects of the men in her society. Rye does not give her more dominant actions a second thought. Butler also uses a female protagonist to fight against gender stratification in the story. Gender stratification is where humans assign males and females to separate groups where they learn what is expected of them and are â€Å"given different access to property, power, prestige, and other privileges available in their society† (Woolf 232). By having a female that is self reliant, assertive, and empowered, Butler combats this notion. The stratification of gender can be seen when the male passenger on the bus believes that Rye is having sex with Obsidian in exchange for the ride and that she should also accommodate him and the rest of the males on the bus (Butler 374). This type of attitude is often seen when men think that they have a right over women. Women are commonly seen as objects or perhaps of less importance. However, this concept is undone by Rye throughout the story. There are many instances in the story where Rye completely disregards this stratification. She was willing to shoot the man on the bus if he came any closer â€Å"They would also stand and watch her shoot him, would he push things that far? † (95), she is the one that instigates sex between her and Obsidian â€Å" She turned suddenly, fumbling for his small box, then urging him to make love to her again. (101), and she point blank shoots the man that murdered Obsidian â€Å" Rye shot the wounded man as he was turning the gun on her† (104). The expected passiveness of women in this society is obviously lost on Rye. She does not care about what is expected of her, or the limited amount of power and prestige that she supposedly holds. Rye effectively destroys all conservative thoughts on what it is to be a female protagonist. The situations that Rye face and her choices that result from them exemplify her as a dominant female. Rye’s dominance shows that she is not concerned with the norms that are expected with the stratification of gender. Issues Of Deviance And Social Control Sociology Essay Deviance is a term used by society to define behaviors that differ from the everyday social norm, this means that majority of people in a society must agree or conform to a certain action or behavior. In 1906, William Sumner came up with the concept to categorize norm into three different groups: folkways, mores, and laws. He defines folkway as the simple day-to-day norm which was based on customs, traditions and mannerisms. If one were not to follow the way of folkway norm it would probably cause others to believe that they are strange or abnormal but would not cause fury. Typical folkway norms include style of dressing, character, physical distance or closeness with others, and eating patterns. Moving on, mores are norms which reflect wide-ranging social ethics. Interracial marriage, having an illegitimate child, and abusing drugs and alcohol would violate the mores laws and would cause a havoc and produce more serious social denunciation. Being in an interracial marriage may make one seem racially impure, bearing an illegitimate child can threaten social definition of a marriage, and abusing or being addicted to drugs and alcohol shows victory of hedonism over prudence. Those who dont comply with mores norm may seem sinful, and set themselves up as a potential threat to society. Furthermore, the laws norm is the strongest custom out of the other two norms. This is because it is backed up by codified social approval. Those who infringe this norm are punished in ways ranging from a fine to imprisonment. Although one may break laws and regulations, it wouldnt necessarily label the offender as deviant. With this said, deviance and crime can respectively fall into one category. Consider this, if certain individual decides to burglarize or vandalize someones property, or even causing harm to another being, it considered both deviant and a crime. Also, there are many other deviant acts that are not considered criminal, such as being over or underweight, being physi cally or mentally handicapped, being in an interracial marriage, and having an illegitimate child. To restate a prior point, these can be considered deviant because although it is not considered a crime, it violates the norm accepted by society. With that said, we can consider crime and deviance as overlapping categorizes with its own individual magnitudes. Attitude, behavior, and condition are the ABCs of deviance. People may be labeled deviant based on their attitudes or belief system which includes religion, political views and beliefs in the supernatural. Having a mental sickness can also fall into the deviant category. The B in the deviant ABCs stands for behavior which people are the most familiar with. Deviant behavior can happen intentionally or unintentionally, for example, one might unintentionally violate a dress-code, or a couple may intentionally engage in bizarre sexual activities, or one may commit murder. Lastly, the C stands for condition. Those who are considered d eviant because of their condition probably acquired it from birth such as being born un-wealthy, being a person of color in a mainly Caucasian dominated community, being born physically handicapped, or being height deviant. In this case, the individual has done nothing wrong or taken any negative actions to be labeled deviant; this also makes it almost impossible to change their deviant status. Although some actions that an individual chooses to take will be universally labeled as deviant behavior, others are judged strictly based on social customs. Heckerts idea of positive deviance would primarily refer to engaging in less selfish actions and more devotion toward the society. Heckert has defined many different ways in which positive deviance is evitable such as altruism, pacifism, cooperation, temperance and many more. Altruism is one of the most cherished form of positive deviance because it brings out the loyalty. All the martyrs fall under this category as they sacrificed themselves for their nation and they can never be forgotten. Those who spread the sign of peace throughout the societies also fall under positive deviance such as Gandhi. Positive deviance is clearly evident in every community where certain individuals or groups are more successful than other when everyone has received same resources but the approaches were different. So basically there is no such thing as human nature, hence deviance is the creation of the social structure rather than something build into our nature. On the other hand, functional deviance approach believes that its the majority members of the society who defines what is normal and what is not. Both approaches look at the society as a whole rather than on individual level. Conflict theory mainly defines societies made up of powerful or powerless. Powerful has no right to be in power but manipulates other convince public about their legitimacy. This can be related to Durkheims state of anomie. Anomie is the result of collective conscious being collapsed. In this situation, people tend to look away from fundamental social expectations and solely focus on their self-interest. In Tim O’brien’s The Things They Carried, the American soldiers of the Vietnam War carry much more than the weight of their equipment, much more than souvenirs or good-luck charms or letters from home. They carried within themselves the intransitive burdens—of fear, of cowardice, of love, of loneliness, of anger, of confusion. Most of all, they carry the truth of what happened to them in the war—a truth that only those who fought in the jungles and the mountains and the marshes of Vietnam can ever understand. Hatchet1 Essay The theme of the story Hatchet is determination, perseverance and survival. Brian Robeson, whose parents are divorced, flies to visit his father in Canadian wilderness. His pilot has a heart attack and dies. Brian managed to land the plane in a lake, and escape unharmed. Now comes the hard part, surviving in the wilderness until rescued. He does have one tool to help him, a hatchet that his mother had given him as a gift. He will have to use it, his own determination, imagination, perseverance and common sense to survive. This flight to see his father in the Canadian wilderness is Brains first time in an airplane. He explains this to the pilot and tells him that he is scared. The pilot feels sorry for Brian and decides to show him that flying is not very difficult. He lets Brian take the steering control and direct the line of flight for awhile. Just when Brian thinks that everything is going well, the pilot has a heart attack and dies. Brian knows he must land the plane himself or die. He tries to use the radio without success. He knows that if he hits the trees, he can die, so he decides to land in the water of a lake. When the plane is in the water, he gets out through a window. He lay on the bank of the lake for a while to rest. Brian knew he needed food and shelter to survive so he set out to find both. He was very careful not to get lost or go too far from the lake where his water was. He found a cherry tree and because he was very hungry, he ate his fill. He filled his windbreaker with cherries to eat later and then managed to find a cave for shelter. He slept very well, but in the morning when he awoke, he saw a bear in the cave. He was terrified, because the bear was only about 20 feet away eating his cherries out of his windbreaker. The bear only looked at Brian and then left. The cherries must have been enough to curb his appetite!The discovery of how to make a fire was very important to Brains survival. He needed to have one at the mouth of the cave to protect him from wild animals, and to signal for help. He discovered it by mistake when a porcupine wandered into his cave! It was dark in the cave and he heard something moving. He knew it was alive, but not what it was. He kicked it. It was then, whe n the quills shot into his foot that he knew it was a porcupine. He was in pain, and knew he could not touch it. He threw his hatchet, and when it hit the rock of the cave instead of the porcupine, it made a spark. He knew how to make the spark, now all he had to do was find the fuel. He knew he needed some type of meat to survive, so he decided to catch fish. First he tried to catch them with his hands, but he soon knew he needed a better plan. He made a primitive bow and arrow. He was very proud of himself when he was able to use it to catch fish, or shoot a bird. He would scoured them and cook them over his fire. He was becoming better all the time at survival. One day a tornado went through the area. The tornado turned out to be a revelation. It moved the plane so that the tail was now sticking out of the water. It was then that Brian remembered that the plane contained a survival pack. It was very difficult to get to, and it took a long time. He almost lost his hatchet while trying to cut a hole in the plane, but he was able to retrieve it. When he finally got back on dry land, he found that the pack contained food, knife, rifle, and C. B. radio. He tried to use the radio, but he did not think it was working. He found out that he was wrong when a rescue plane showed up, it was working! Brian Robeson is a typical 13 year old boy trying to cope with his parents divorce. He is not happy about his mothers new boyfriend, and he is very excited about going to visit his father. He wears the typical tennis shoes, jeans, and T-shirt with a windbreaker. He is not an outdoorsman, but he has watched a lot of TV and always paid attention to how they s urvived difficult situations. He is scared of flying, and tells the pilot this. As his situation changes and he is faced with life or death in a survival situation, he chooses to be brave and strong and survive.I liked Hatchet because it is about teenage adventure. When I was reading I was trying to imagine what I would do if I were Brian. I think that he was very tough. He was always thinking about what to do to survive. The thing that I did not like about the book was that everything that he did seemed to take so long! It seemed to take a few days to start a fire or to catch a fish. I did not like the ending, it was unrealistic to have a tornado go through and all of a sudden, the tail of the plane is sticking out of the water. Then, after all that time he miraculously remembers the survival pack is still in the plane. Why could not he remember it in all those other weeks?I think that this book is especially good for preteens or teens. Anyone who likes adventure and wild life woul d like it. A person who likes scouting and the outdoors would probably like the book. 13. Plane tail sticking out of waterIf I could make a change to the story, I think I would change the part with the tornado. I think that it was weird. It seemed like the kind of magic that you see in cartoons. If I wrote the ending to the book, I would make it more realistic. He maybe could find sulfur to make a flare or a search plane would see his smoke signal. He could even try diving over and over again to get back into the plane for the survival pack that he may remember was there.
